When HALO Effect honoree Tatum Parker was six years old, she was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer called Ewing's Sarcoma. Her year-long stay in the hospital included three major surgeries and thirteen courageous rounds of chemotherapy, which eventually wiped out the cancer. A year and a half later, however, it returned. Once again powering through intensive treatment, Tatum beat cancer for a second time and remains cancer-free today!
During her time in the hospital, Tatum found comfort in a bag of toys she received from the from the Gabby Krause Foundation. The "Bag of Fun," which included games and activities, lifted her spirits during those long and difficult days in treatment. The gift had such a positive impact on her, she decided to pay forward.
And that's how Tatum's Bags of Fun was born.
Today, Tatum's Bags of Fun delivers toys and games to every pediatric cancer patient in Indiana. And while these bags help pass the time with fun activities, they are so much more than just toys -- they help build hope and foster strength to kids who need and deserve it most. At just 14, Tatum has built a charity that has not only served many kids across Indiana, but has succeeded in fundraising and spreading the message that a little fun and positivity can help make a painful journey just a bit lighter.
Tatum embodies the core idea of Help and Leading Others: She turned a personal and life-changing experience into a thoughtful and truly impactful movement. Now, that's incredibly cool.

6. That is, if you have time juggling your fabulous Italian internship.
7. And your fabulous Italian boyfriend.
Give me pizza or give me Paolo.
8. But no worries... if you get fired, your CEO will take you to his seaside villa!
9. And if you get put in the Witness Protection Program, it will look like this!
10. And your Aussie boyfriends will look like this!
ASDJHKSD PETE AND AVERY FOREVER.
11. And you'll use your wits and charm to turn two bumbling criminals into good guys!
12. And when you take a family vacation, it'll be to ATLANTIS!
13. And you always think of good comebacks on the spot.
14. Because in this life, you're the exception.

As the ancient Hawaiians used to say: He who listens to Tito is less likely to get stuck in a coconut tree.
Make your own destiny!
Sometimes life is grand. And sometimes it stinks.
The grass is always greener, man.
When you want to accomplish something in life, you have to figure out how to make it happen and GO for it!
Don't be self-absorbed -- it doesn't look good on anybody.
You can front all you want, but the truth always reveals itself.
Don't stoop down your enemy's level, yo.
Sometimes the best things in life are the easiest to overlook.
Appreciate what you've got today, because it could be gone tomorrow...
If you believe in yourself, the sky's the limit!

UP IN MY GRILL

Amber of Amber Did It! knows that every Memorial Day cookout requires certain essentials. Hamburger? Check. Hot dog? Check. Condiments? Check. Picnic table cloth? Check. I think we can all agree that there really is only one word to describe this situation: YUM!

Mmm mm mmm! Paulina's watermelon nails are making us want to take a big bite out of the colorful, juicy fruit right about now. The pink and green pepo is a must-have at any summer BBQ, but if you've got the nails to go with it, you'll kill the cookout game so hard we may have to call you a waterfelon. BOOM.
ANTSY FOR THE WEEKEND
Credit: Estanina's Stand
Alright, so maybe you'll come across some uninvited guests at your BBQ this weekend, but if they're as cute as the one's on our girl Carla's fingers, we'll grant a hall pass. Also, is that a kiwi on her index finger? We're not entirely sure... but we are entirely into it. (P.S. how cay-ute is that gingham table cloth?!)

It's almost Mother's Day, Degrassians (if you just opened a 1-800-Flowers tab... you're welcome...) and we're celebrating with some of the most heartwarming, cringe-worthy and all-around memorable Degrassi MOM-ents ever!
I DON'T WANT YOU TO DO THIS ON YOUR OWN.
Clare's mom was a little surprised that her smart, talented daughter could get herself pregnant at seventeen, but she eventually assured Clare that they would get through it together. Sure, Clare Edwards "always has a plan," but when it comes to figuring out what in the world you're gonna do with a baby on the way, Mom needs to step in. Way to go, Helen.
A SELFISH THING AND AN INSENSITIVE THING
When Audra Torres gave Drew a much-need piece of her mind, she officially joined the ranks of iconic Degrassi moms. We all know Drew made a dumb, selfish mistake sleeping with Zoe, but it wasn't until his mom's unsweetened wisdom knocked some sense into him that he realized the gravity of his actions. Thank you, Audra, for saying exactly what Drew needed to hear.
REEL IT IN, PETER.
We all knew Ms. Hatzilakos as the sweet teacher-turned-principal (whose first name is Daphne *mind blown*), but it's easy to forget her most important role of all: Peter's mom. Boy, did she have a handful. When it seemed like Peter turned his life around, he hit a MAJOR hiccup when he got caught up in a little crystal meth addiction. Luckily, his mom was right there by his side when he need someone to help him get through it.
LEAN ON ME
When Maya was tormented by nightmares of Miles hurting himself, she didn't know what to do. Having gone through a similar situation before, it wasn't clear if Maya's thoughts were real or if they were they just in her head. Mrs. Matlin didn't necessarily have the answers, but she let Maya lean on her shoulder. And in that moment, it's exactly what her daughter needed.
STEPPING IN AS MOM
Bianca didn't have an ideal upbringing, so it was easy to understand why she was a little rough around the edges. When Momma Torres stepped in however (which she has no problem doing), she really set a positive example for Bianca. Some could say they ended up being besties. Goes to show that you don't need to have the same blood to be family! <3
BETTER THIS TIME
With her iffy past and temporary jail time, K.C. always had a strained relationship with his mom. In fact, he was convinced that he'd be better off without her and he fought hard to live in a group home. But when he realized there really is no love like a mother's, he decided to give her another chance. Seeing these two reunited is a straight shot to the feels.
TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
Fiona wasn't looking forward to her deposition against her abusive, jerk-bag ex, Bobby. When it seemed like Fions was at her breaking point, her mom supported her through the case.
BEATING CANCER TOGETHER
Anya became a rock for her mom when she was diagnosed with cancer. It was a rough time, but after months of radiotherapy she kicked cancer's butt!
SMOOTHING THINGS OUT
We all know Manny didn't have the smoothest relationship with her parents. I mean, when your dad calls you a slut and kicks you out, bonds tend to break. Fortunately, family is all about being there for each other, and so, after some time apart, Manny eventually made up with her parents. The look in her mom's eyes when she saw her in her debut dress is everything! The feels!
What are some of your favorite Degrassi MOM-ents? Share in the comments and don't forget to wish your mom (or any special woman in your life) a happy Mother's Day!
HALO Effect Honoree Katie Stagliano: How One Girl's Fight Against Hunger Started with a Single CabbagePosted on 05/06/2015 by TeenNickBlogger
Hunger. Now that's a big problem. Huge, even. Millions of people around the world don't get the nutrition they need to lead healthy, happy lives -- it's a statistic both staggering and troubling, and one that 15-year-old Katie Stagliano refuses ignore.
It all started with a single cabbage. When Katie was 9 years old, she planted a tiny cabbage seedling for a school project. When the cabbage grew to an amazing 40 pounds, she decided to take it to a local soup kitchen where it helped feed over 275 people. A few short years later, Katie is the founder of an youth volunteer organization called Katie's Krops, which feeds families and people in need across the nation.
"My dream to grow an end to hunger started in my backyard. I never once imagined that there would be 80 Katie's Krops vegetable gardens growing across the United States, with the whole harvest benefiting people/families in need," Katie said. "Working together we, kids, have donated thousands and thousands of pounds of fresh produce to soup kitchens, food pantries, backpack programs, cancer patients and people in need."
According to Katie, the mission is simple: Grow a healthy solution to a global problem. Did you know that most emergency food programs offer primarily packaged and processed food? As Katie put it, "By providing the healthiest food to those in need we are supplying people with the vitamin and nutrients they need to fight disease and enable children to thrive."
What's especially unique about Katie's organization is the way it inspires other young volunteers to get involved. Her community of has grown to 80 gardens across the United States, harvested by kids who share Katie's passion for this cause. And the volunteers themselves benefit from their service to others: As Katie explains, "They learn about nutrition, science, how to manage a budget, about agriculture, time management, compassion and so much more."
If you want to get involved with Katie's Krops, head over to http://www.katieskrops.com/ to learn about winning a grant to start a Katie's Krops vegetable garden in your own community, scrumptious recipes and more!

It's that magical time of year again: the dress-shopping, corsage-buying, and picture-taking phenomenon that is prom. You just can't wait, RIGHT?
For some people, the idea of the biggest dance in school isn't so magical. Whether that special date never came along, you hate dressing up, or you simply cringe at the thought of prom altogether, never fear! Instead of spending your energy dreading that "special" night, why not throw the BEST ANTI-PROM EVER?! We've come up with five fantastic ways to complete the task, so plan away.
1. Get Outta Town: Don't spend your prom night at home with your cat. Instead, grab a few friends, get away from the prom fuss, and escape to that fancy, new restaurant a few towns over or the nearest beach for the weekend--bonfire & roasted marshmallows, anyone?
2. Prom-Themed Movie Night: Rather than getting all dressed up and spending the night out, cozy up in your sweatpants, pop in the popcorn, and enjoy the hilarity that is prom from the comfort of your own home. You know there's nothing better than making fun of a hilariously terrible prom movie.
3. Create Your Own Magical Evening: While your classmates are dancing to the soothing tones of Iggy Azalea and Lil Jon, create an atmosphere that is truly beautiful and memorable for you and your date. Enjoy a delicious meal on a table outside, decorate your porch with string lights, and put together your favorite playlist. Heck, light a candle or two. You definitely won't miss the noisy chaos of "real" prom.
4. Never Grow Up: In lieu of completing the final teenage rite of passage, relive your childhood. Invite your friends over for a night of board games, junk food, and SpongeBob marathons. Break out the Play-Doh and Legos and rediscover the good old days when everything was magical.
5. Throw Your Own Bad Prom with Your Friends: Go to your local thrift store and pick out your favorite tacky '80s prom outfit (something colorful with a hideous pattern). Encourage everyone else to dress as ridiculously as possible. Hang a sheet on your wall and set up a photo booth to commemorate a night of fun, friends, hideous outfits, and awful music.
So what if prom's not your thing? Get out there and have a good time!
