  • Degrassi Wrap-Up: Zombie, Pt. 2

    Posted on 04/05/2013 by Lisa

What did you think of "Zombie, pt. 2," a.k.a. the Degrassi spring finale? Let's talk. If you haven't seen the episode yet, watch it online before you read any further. *Spoilers below.*

    Maya
I have to start with Maya, because she went through so much in this episode. I'm so not a fan of this Harry guy. When he tried to get her to blow off her audition and make out in the prop closet at school, I was like, "Really, dude?" When she told him about throwing her cello in the dumpster, and he said, "That's so proper," I wanted to take him to the prop closet myself and lock him in there forever. Don't even get me started on "Just go with it." I never want to see this guy again.

I DO want to see lots more of Maya. (Shoutout to Olivia Scriven, the actress who plays Maya, for making that breakdown scene so emotionally intense.) I'm so glad Katie and her mom came home when they did. I think we all knew Maya had been trying to block her feelings out instead of dealing with them, but seeing everything come out at once was so heartbreaking. I hope finally opening up makes it easier for her to move on.

    Zig and Maya
Meanwhile, Zig seems like he wants to be there for Maya, but I was relieved when they had that talk about waiting until she was ready to date. Right now, Zig seems like the anti-Harry, so I'm starting to be OK with the idea of Zaya. Just take it slow, guys. Don't rush me.

    Drew and Clare
The election results are in... Were you surprised that Drew won? I would've voted for Clare, but after the election, when Drew asked her to be his "veep," I realized I like them as a team. They sort of balance each other out, right? I thought one of the cutest moments in this episode was when Drew found Clare crying and tried to comfort her. So awkward! But he gets points for trying.

    Clare
Connor's attempt to reunite Eli and Clare seems like a failure so far. It's strange to me that Clare was so worried about Eli a few weeks back, and now she feels like her own life is a total mess. I wonder if she would've been more likely to give Eli another chance if he'd had better timing? She was so upset about the election that she probably wasn't thinking clearly. When she told Eli, "We aren't a fairytale," I said "Whut?!?" Clare's always reading romantic fantasy novels, so I figured she'd be first in line for a happily ever after. (If you've seen the promo for the graduation special, I bet you're just as curious as I am about that shot of Eli and the carriage.)

    Jenna, Connor, and Alli
I'm glad that Connor, Jenna, and Alli are getting along again. All it took was knowing how they like their coffee! I just remembered the fight between Connor and Alli back in season 8, when she broke his pencil and he spit on her. Our little gifted kids have grown up so fast. :)

OK. Now let's go watch the promo for "The Time of My Life" again. It gives me chills.

  • Degrassi Wrap-Up: Bitter Sweet Symphony, pt. 1

    Posted on 02/15/2013 by Lisa

If you haven't seen the brand new Degrassi episode "Bitter Sweet Symphony, pt. 1," watch it online before you read any further! *Spoilers below*

    Cam

Everyone seemed pretty happy to be back at Degrassi... right up until they got their Spirit Week bandanas. (That's not how Spirit Week is supposed to work, guys.) When Tristan warned Cam to watch out for Zig, I was like, "This is gonna get messy..." but I had no idea just how messy it would get. That hockey fight was brutal, and the stuff Zig said to Cam on the steps? So mean and so wrong.

    Cam and Maya
    A moment of peace, pre-pillow-fight. :)

Seeing Cam cry breaks my heart. I have lots of experience with depression and I wish I could protect everyone else in the world from feeling that kind of pain. I'm glad that when Cam ran into a random classroom to be alone, Alli was in there, willing to talk him through it. Alli seems to think flowers can fix anything. I'm not sure I buy that, but when Cam showed up at the Matlins' as a "bouquet with legs," I just wanted to hug him. I mean, I know he hurt Zig, but I also understand that he's going through some tough stuff, and I think he deserves another chance. The total cuteness of Cam and Maya (and Hoot) wrestling on the couch pretty much made my night. I lovelovelove those two (or three, if you count Hoot).

    Dallas and Alli

Meanwhile, Dallas seems really into Alli, but has he ruined his chances with her by bullying Cam? I can never quite decide how I feel about Dallas. I guess he's a good guy somewhere inside, but I wish he didn't care quite so much about hockey. Life isn't always about winning, Dallas! Sometimes, you've just gotta chill.

Eli, feeling tempted by Clare's journal
    Dooon't do it, Eli!

As for Eli and Clare and the locker sharing, I have to point out how far Eli has come since the hoarding storyline. He has room in his locker for Clare's stuff, and he's willing to share it with her! And that line about how she'll have her own drawer in his NYU dorm room? *dreamy sigh* But after all the stuff Eli has been through, I was really disappointed that he decided to read Clare's journal. I mean, I know Dave kind of urged him into it, but... I think privacy is essential, and I don't ever, ever, ever, under any circumstances, think it's OK to read someone else's journal (or their texts or email, for that matter).

    Clare

That said, I feel like Clare could've been a little more careful with her journal, because the temptation to peek at someone's private thoughts can be tough to resist. Maybe she should've kept the journal in her bag, or at home? Then again, if Helen or Glen found it, that could've caused an even bigger nightmare for her. Can you imagine how they would've reacted to her entries about Jake?!? Ohhhh, that would've been bad.

The questions in my head at the moment:
Will Clare forgive Eli for invading her privacy?
Does Dallas have any chance with Alli at this point?
    Will Camaya stay together?
What is that adorable little owl up to?

Leave a comment if you have any thoughts! And don't miss Bitter Sweet Symphony, pt. 2, Friday at 9pm et.

  • Degrassi: Is Alli pregnant?

    Posted on 07/26/2012 by Lisa

An unplanned pregnancy is hard for anyone, but it couldn't come at a worse time for Alli -- she was just offered a scholarship to MIT.

I feel like so many people think teen pregnancies only happen when people don't use birth control, but this Dave/Alli storyline is a reminder that while half of all unplanned pregnancies happen because couples don't use any contraception at all; the other half happen to couples who say they are using some sort of birth control, they're just not using it very well. If you're ready for sex you also have to be ready for all the consequences too. Getting on birth control is the first step, but you have to remember to use it RIGHT. Alli is a seriously smart girl, but she's also really busy... it's not surprising that she'd forget to take a pill or two.

According to StayTeen.org, about 730,000 teen girls in the U.S. get pregnant each year -- and most of them didn't mean to. The only foolproof way to prevent pregnancy is to not have sex at all.

Birth control only works you use it carefully and correctly, every single time. You can't just "sort of" use protection. The good news is that there is a method out there that's right for everyone. Find out everything you ever wanted to know about birth control from StayTeen.org.

In a survey of 12th grade girls, two-thirds (66%) who are sexually active and use contraception say they do so because they don't want to disappoint their parents by getting pregnant. I get that Alli was afraid of disappointing her parents, but I couldn't believe that she told her mom the pregnancy test was Jenna's. That's a pretty terrible thing to do to a friend, especially since Jenna has been there for Alli during all of this. I hope that in tonight's episode, Alli decides to tell her mother the truth. I feel like she owes that to Jenna.

Do you think Alli and Dave will stay a couple if there's a baby in the picture? Dave seems like he wants to be there for Alli no matter what, but if he stays, he's the exception: 8 out of 10 dads don't marry the teenage mothers of their babies.

What's next for Alli? Watch the first scene of tonight's episode now, and see the rest at 10pm et.

  • Nowhere to Run: Marshmallows and Mosquitoes

    Posted on 11/18/2011 by Lisa

Here's another behind-the-scenes video shot on the set of Degrassi: Nowhere to Run.

"It's really dark, really late, and full of bugs." - Aislinn Paul (Clare)

If you could sit by that fire, making s'mores (or making out), with any Degrassi character, who would it be?

  • Nowhere to Run: Go behind the scenes.

    Posted on 11/17/2011 by Lisa

Warning: Cuteness! Here's Melinda Shankar (Alli), Luke Bilyk (Drew), Munro Chambers (Eli), Aislinn Paul (Clare), and Justin Kelly (Jake), hanging out on the set of Degrassi: Nowhere to Run.

I love when they play tortured, emotional characters on Degrassi, but in real life, they all seem so nice.

Random question: Would you rather hang out with the Degrassi cast -- or their characters? (In a cabin in the woods, of course.)

  • Who wants more pics from Degrassi: Nowhere to Run?

    Posted on 11/15/2011 by Lisa

You guys seemed pretty psyched about the Degrassi pictures I posted last week, so here are a few more...

Degrassi: Nowhere to Run. Marisol at the cabin.
THIS is how Marisol dresses to hang out in the woods? I hope she's wearing bug spray.

Degrassi: Nowhere to Run. Alli at the cabin.
At least Alli brought an air mattress. (Is every air mattress ever made that army green color? I'd rather have a pink one.)

Degrassi: Nowhere to Run. Katie and Drew at the cabin.
I'm proud of Katie for wearing mismatched clothes and her hair in braids. This is how you dress for the woods, Marisol!

Degrassi: Nowhere to Run. Jake at the cabin.
If this were a horror movie, that cooler would be full of body parts!!! Just sayin'.

What are you doing on Friday? Because I heard there's a party going on at Jake's cabin... Degrassi: Nowhere to Run. TeenNick. Friday. 9pm et.

p.s. Have you seen this Nowhere to Run flipbook? It's got even MORE photos!

  • Lying, Cheating, and Stealing

    Posted on 08/22/2011 by Lisa

SPOILERS BELOW, PEOPLE. Keep reading if you've seen "Drop It Like It's Hot, pt. 1." If you haven't seen it yet, go retake the "How 'Now or Never' Are You?" quiz or something. :)

Yes, Liam. Hannah is awesome. But she's taken.
She likes you, Wesley. Don't stress.

Oh... the things we do for love.

Wesley -- sweet, honest Wesley! -- is lying to impress Hannah. Dude, she LIKES you. Stop feeling threatened, before you screw it up.

Alli worked her butt off to earn her parents' respect. So WHY is she cheating at poker to make extra money? To impress Dave. Sigh, sigh, sigh. (And don't get me started on the fact that Dave almost has sex before he's ready. I'm still shaking my head about that one.)

Bianca is so afraid of Vince that she's willing to deal drugs for him, and when she can't find a buyer, she steals money from Imogen. It's killing me to see her trying so hard to protect Drew, especially since he had no idea it's happening.

There were some major Now or Never decisions tonight, but were ANY of them good? Which lying-cheaty-stealy mistake do you think is destined to have the worst repercussions?

p.s. I'm not sure I'm prepared for the rest of "Degrassi: Now or Never." Tonight's ep seemed to be stirring up all sorts of new trouble.

p.p.s. DO NOT KICK THE VOLLEYBALLS!

  • Kidneys and Cash

    Posted on 08/16/2011 by Mary

THARS SPOILERS DOWN BELOW. Avert your eyes until you've seen "Mr. Brightside, pt. 2".

Well! GIANT relief on the Holly J front! Not that kidney transplant surgery is a walk in the park, but it sure is nice that there's a kidney to transplant!

Holly J and her birth mom Dawn, changing the subject to something besides kidneys.

I know after last night's ep, some people were feeling pretty anti-Dawn:

"Holly J's mom has entered my "degrassi enemies" list. COME ON LADY GIVE YOUR DAUGHTER THE FLIPPIN KIDNEY! Way to be there for your kid. Good job." - ALLABOUTELI<3

But after tonight's episode... did anyone change their feelings toward HJ's birth mom after seeing how hard she was struggling with guilt? I have to say, it was weirdly kind of a relief for me to see her feeling terrible. Like she's at least human.

I also maybe feel a teensy bit weird that Fiona kind of bought Holly J's way out of this? The ethics of paying living donors for their organs are really slippery -- the problem is that, taken to one extreme, it would mean only rich people could have their lives saved by organ donation and poor people would be out of luck. And you definitely don't want a situation where, say, people can pay as much as they want for a kidney (above and beyond reimbursing expenses) because then it would create situations where financially desperate people would be selling their organs to wealthy recipients.

But, doing a little research today, I'm seeing that there's some talk out there about loosening the laws about reimbursing living donors for lost income, since financial hardship is a common reason for people to not donate. In fact, Canada (British Columbia, anyway) is one of the places where it's somewhat allowed (though the lost wages reimbursements are still not much). Anyway, it's... a pretty thorny topic, to be sure. What? A thorny topic on Degrassi? Whodathunk!

    But enough kidney talk:
What do you guys think of Drew and Katie? Datie? Krew? Dratie? Isn't it interesting that Drew is such a magnet for over-achiever girls (Alli, now Katie)? I guess they want to overachieve on the hotness of their boyfriend, too?

Also interesting that Adam just kind of let that one go. I guess since he has a definitive answer about her not being into him, he had a minute to get over her. Plus there was that time Fiona chose Adam over Drew, so.

And UP TOP ALLI BANDHARI! Finally broke the Bandhari sibling dating curse! Anyone out there want to hire her to talk to your parents?

  • Did Dave Do That Right?

    Posted on 08/04/2011 by Mary

    BEWARE! SPOILERS AHOY.

Time for a fun game of... "LET'S BOSS DAVE AROUND!" If you were the boss of Dave, how would you have told him to handle his Sadie/Allie conundrum?

    Dave and Alli on Degrassi
Dave and Alli, thinkin' 'bout it.

Obviously it's easy for us to play Armchair Love Quarterback now that we know how things turned out, but let's put ourselves at the crucial decision moment and take it from there:

    - Dave had been harshly rejected by Alli more than once, but thought this time... maybe there was a vibe. Was it possible he was crazy and wishfully misinterpreting "signals"? Yes.
    - Dave liked Sadie a lot. Sadie's a great girl and a great girlfriend. But he had a bigger heart-spark for Alli.

So: dump a good, solid thing for an enticing question mark?

One way to look at it is: if he doesn't feel 100% about Sadie, maybe he shouldn't be with her anyway.

Another way to look at it is: being single when you had a decent thing and blew it... not as fun as the other kinds of being single.

What would you have bossed Dave into doing?

And on the Cake front: Well, well! Looks like Clare's not actually getting taken for a ride by Jake! I think he really likes her... I think he finds her refreshing. Plus, let's not discount the fact that they knew each other when they were little. The whole "throwing frogs" at her thing -- is there any surer sign of a youngster crush? What do you guys think of their long-term potential?

And: I'm really glad Adam and Drew aren't leaving Degrassi. That would have been the biggest bum out ever.

  • The Girl Who Took Those Degrassi Pictures

    Posted on 06/01/2011 by Mary

Olivia Bee, teen photographer Hi all. The lady in that picture is Olivia Bee. She's a professional photographer who's still in high school -- she's 17 -- and she took all of the gorgeous still photos at the Degrassi: Now or Never teaser shoot with all the fireworks and whatnot. We like her very much. Especially after talking to her. (Btw, most of this interview is about the life of a teenage professional photographer, but if you just want to skip to the part about the Degrassi shoot, click here.)

    --

So, first of all, how did you start getting paid to do photography while you're still in high school?
Well, my freshman year in high school I got a bunch of emails from VSA Partners, and I kind of disregarded them because I was like, "That's probably spam, whatever." And then I got an email from Converse directly and they were like, "Hey, we'd love to have you take some photos on a shoot, kind of a mentoring process and we'll pay you, and it'll be really fun," blah blah blah, so I got to skip school and go on a shoot in Portland for Converse. And I just got to experiment and see what it was all about, take some photos, and then everything just kind of followed. They took a chance on me and now, this is happening.

That's amazing. How did they find you, Flickr?
    Yup! Flickr.

Wow. Did you already have a ton of contacts on Flickr before that?
Yeah, I had a lot of followers, and that came with the popularity I guess. It was all pretty much by luck.

Were you nervous at all? Does any of this faze you? It sounds like it could be really intense.
It is intense. Before I worked with Converse I was so nervous. I didn't even want to go, I was so scared. I was like, "What are they gonna think of me? I'm totally not gonna be able to take pictures once I get there because that's just what'll totally happen to me." But it was fine. I'm always a little nervous right before, if things aren't working out, or if there's no schedule, or the shoot is disorganized. But if I'm just taking pictures then I'm totally fine.

New Degrassi guy alert: Jake, played by Justin Kelly
New Degrassi guy alert: Jake, played by Justin Kelly

I would imagine there's a huge difference between taking pictures of your friends in a relaxed atmosphere and like "Well, we're on a deadline, and these people are only here for four hours, and you need to get the shot."
It's really different. It's like I have to be an adult, I have to transfer from being this stupid kid who just hangs out with her friends all the time and I have to be a professional, and I have to deliver. There's a lot of pressure, actually. But as long as I'm still taking pictures I can deal with it, because that's what I do for fun anyway.

Has anybody ever been snotty to you because you're 17? Or underestimated you?
Yes. All the time. I get so much snottiness. People just think I'm like a little kid, and 'why are they paying her to do what all these other people can do; why would they ever hire someone who's that old; she's never gone to college."

    You just brush 'em off?
    I'm just kinda like F.U.

Haha, word! So how did you fall in love with photography in the first place? Well, I took a darkroom class in 6th grade because I went to an arts-based middle school. And I really was really bad at it at first. I took a lot of pictures of Christmas ornaments and stuffed animals, things it wouldn't be embarrassing to take pictures of. And then I just started spending extra time in the darkroom -- I don't know, it was kind of an accidental, found love. But now I can't live without it.

How do your friends feel about being photographed all the time?
I think they like it? I guess some people are annoyed like "Aw, why do you have that camera again" but it's just playful, not pissed or anything. Most of the time, they really like it. It's kinda cool, they're like the characters of my life and I think they realize that. And no one takes family photos anymore so the moms like it, too.

I have friends who are videographers or photographers who always have a camera at any event, and they've told me how people are sometimes like "Oh God, put down the camera and just experience this" but the next day, everyone's SO psyched that the pictures and video exist.
TOTALLY. Totally. The whole "Time" thing. [By this I assume she means like capturing time, time being linear. You know. The whole Time thing.] Plus, I feel like, people can say that to me, but it's like "No, this is MY way of experiencing it. This is how I want to experience everything." It's not their deal, it's mine.

Photo from the Degrassi: Now or Never fireworks shoot by Olivia Bee

    What is awesome about photography?
There are a million moments you could capture, but capturing that one that's perfect... it's pretty amazing. You can make a whole other world with things you already have. It's... it's like real life on paper. Or fake life on paper, depending on how you look at it.

Does having a camera ever help you meet people?
Oh yeah, all the time. It's mostly short little conversations, but I like short little conversations.

So. This Degrassi shoot. What was that like?
It was crazy. 'Cause I'd never been on a TV set before. Usually still production [as in still photography, vs. video] is: a producer, you have your assistants, you have your gaffer, the stylist, the make-up artist, and then I'll have a studio teacher. But with this there were like 150 people and they all had different jobs and that was just crazy for me.

A studio teacher -- so even if it's a one-day shoot you have to have a studio teacher because you're a minor?
It depends on what state, but yeah. California, definitely.

Were you already a Degrassi fan?
We actually watch it in Health class at school. Usually episodes about STDs or relationships, violence... because Degrassi covers a lot of teen health things like that. Usually we had a separate episode for each lesson but sometimes we would just watch it, just 'cause.

    Your health teacher sounds awesome.
    He's hilarious.

What do you remember from that day?
Well, it was freezing. It was going from like 7pm to 5am, which, I'd never done that before! I had a 4:20 am call time a couple weeks ago but this was like ridiculous.
Oh, and it was actually pretty funny... when they were filming the scene where Sav was standing on the lifeguard chair swinging his jacket around and there were all these fireworks going on, and since they weren't filming for sound, he was just kind of yelling things because it was supposed to look like he's yelling. And he was just like "[BAD WORD] DEGRASSI! THESE KIDS SUCK!"

Hahahaha. I love that guy. Did you have favorite characters or favorite episodes before?
Now I've met them and I can't pick favorites! I like 'em all, they were really sweet in person, too. It was really nice to know that they weren't stuck-up or anything.
