    Holiday Hairstyle

Want to up your holiday party look this year? Look no further! TeenNick Top 10's Morgan Lynzi teamed up with her hair dresser to bring us a super cute, super simple winter braid hairstyle. Check out our step-by-step guide below and try it out for yourself, then show us your finished product using #Top10WinterHair!

    Holiday Hairstyle

    1. First, separate two sections of hair from the back of your natural part down to your ear on each side. Push those sections of hair to the front.

    Holiday Hairstyle

    2. Separate the top back half of your hair with a clip and tie the bottom half with an elastic so you have clean separate sections.

    Holiday Hairstyle

    3. For this hairstyle, we'll create an inside out braid. If you've never done one before, it's like a regular french braid, except braided backwards so the braid is exposed to the outside. Separate three pieces of hair and braid each piece under instead of over.

    Holiday Hairstyle

Continue braiding while adding pieces of hair from the top back section until you've reached the end of your part. Tie the first section with a clear elastic so it doesn't show.

    Holiday Hairstyle

    4. Repeat step three on the other side so you have two french braids!

    Holiday Hairstyle

    5. Tie each braid together with a clear elastic tie to create a braided half ponytail.

    Holiday Hairstyle

Untie the bottom half of your hair and, voila! You have a wintry 'do that'll turn some heads this holiday season!

Try this style out for yourself and show us on Twitter using #Top10WinterHair! And for more beauty and fashion tips, catch TeenNick Top 10 Thursdays at 9pm!

  • Melinda's Beauty Blog: How To Make A Dramatic Eye

Posted on 04/24/2014 by Melinda Shankar

    Melinda's Beauty Blog: Dramatic Eye

FAN QUESTION: What is the best way to make a dramatic eye? Every time I try I end up using way too much shadow and liner. Help!

When creating a dramatic eye look, the best advice I can give is to start light and gradually (and most importantly, evenly) work your way darker. The most common error I see with a smokey eye is dark pigment not evenly distributed. This error shapes your eyes two different ways, and we all know that look isn't cute! Until you get the hang of it, I'd suggest replicating each stroke to both eyes as you go to avoid forgetting a step or forgetting which colour you used.

    Melinda's Beauty Blog: Dramatic Eye

For a beginner smokey eye, I'd always suggest using browns or blues, as black is a very harsh colour and is usually minimally used in an average dramatic look. For example: Try a light gold all over the lid as a base. Once that step is complete, use a crease brush to blend a darker colour (I usually use brown) into your eye lid crease. Repeat step two until the desired amount of colour is applied. Blend the darker colour into the outer part of the eyelid (closest to your ears), then complete the look with a top liner and mascara. Tip: Once you've mastered this simple smokey eye guide, try switching it up or adding colours for variety!

I've had such an amazing time blogging for TeenNick and I cannot thank you all enough for sending in your beauty questions! You've all inspired me to start my own lifestyle/fashion/beauty blog called 'Eye Spy Melinda'! Check it out and let me know what you think! Tweet your blog topic suggestions to @MelindaShankar

    Melinda's Beauty Blog: Personal Style

FAN QUESTION: What's your sense of style? Do you mix things up or stay the same? Do you change your look depending solely on your mood or do you like to keep consistent with a signature style?

My fashion sense ranges with my mood, the season, the occasion, and what city I'm in. To generalize my style, I'd say it's a mix of glamour and femininity. I love dresses, skirts, crop tops, heels, etc. But that's not to say I don't enjoy trends of other fashion genre's like rock, or boho.

My trick to keeping up with what's "in" while staying true to my personal sense of style is to pick one thing about another genre that I like and mix it into my own. For example, leather jackets with studs seem to be a staple wardrobe item that almost everyone has. While that might not seem like something I'd typically go for, knee high leather boots are. Paired together, you already have a cool edge to the look. You can keep it as is and pair it with pants and a cool undershirt. Or, depending on the occasion, I'd "Mindy-fy" the ensemble by adding a dress under to jacket to soften the look, or opt for a crop top with a high-waisted skirt.

    Melinda's Beauty Blog: Personal Style

Accessories and/or makeup can be a simple solution for setting the outfit tone. One ensemble can be mixed up three different ways: hoop earrings, bold red lips and cat eyeliner vs. a drop flower necklace and pink gloss with matching blush vs. stacked, studded bangles and rings with a smokey eye and nude lip. One outfit, three styles.

In terms of everyday attire in Toronto, my style fluctuates depending upon the occasion, but I always keep it glamorous and girly. If I'm in NYC, my looks are usually high fashion with full event-ready hair & makeup, but if in LA, my look is au contraire with simple/neutral makeup looks and more casual outfits like jean skirts and a cute shirt with over-sized glasses and dainty jewels. However, no matter what city, mood or time of day, I guarantee that you'll always find me rocking some sort of heel shoe!

Take a look through my Instagram (@mindyshankar), as I usually post my at home and trip #OOTDs.

  • Melinda's Beauty Blog: Liquid or Pencil Eyeliner?

Melinda's Beauty Blog: Lipstick or Lip Gloss

Melinda's Beauty Blog: Lipstick or Lip Gloss

FAN QUESTION: What type of eyeliner would you recommend? Liquid, gel or pencil? How do you apply them properly?

I'm specific when it comes to my makeup looks, especially when a makeup artist I'm unfamiliar with creates a look for my face. My rule is: you have to be happy with how you look, at the end of the day -- it's your face!!

Eyeliner on the top lid is a must for me, as I feel I need it to complete the look. My eyelids are rather large so just mascara and eye shadow can make me look younger.!

On an everyday basis, a pencil liner is ideal, as it has the same effect while being subtle for a casual look. In order to keep a steady line, a good trick is to keep your pinky or a finger placed on your face. Remember to always keep the pencil sharp for a precise line.

Gel liner is the happy medium if you want a more noticeable look. If anyone has problems with drawing a steady line or has difficulties with colour consistency (density or thickness) this can be a good option, as you can build to perfection by going over the line repeatedly without it flaking off!

Liquid liner is my personal favourite. Once you've mastered the art of drawing a steady line, the thought of a bold black line on your eyes won't scare you away. There are many ways to apply eyeliner. As long as you achieve your desired look, there's no right or wrong way to go about it. If at first stroke you start thin at the corner of your eye and sweep the brush outward to where you want the line to be, you can always go back in and colour the rest in to perfection!

Tip: Dare to be bold and attempt my favourite eyeliner look, a winged out cat liner.

  • Melinda's Beauty Blog: Lipstick Or Lip Gloss?

Melinda's Beauty Blog: Lipstick or Lip Gloss

FAN QUESTION: Lipstick vs. lip gloss: Which is better, and why?

If you've ever seen my image sense when I'm not in Alli Bhandari-mode, you'll know that I'm a big fan of makeup. A quick lipstick and mascara combo is one of my favourite go-to looks when I'm in a hurry. To me, lipstick has a more finished and elegant look, whereas lip gloss is often more youthful and fun. Depending on the occasion, a lipstick/lip gloss combo is a perfect best of both worlds!

When I was filming my sitcom How To Be Indie I played a fourteen-year-old. My makeup artist always used lip gloss when applying character makeup to get that youthful look. I personally wear a coloured lip gloss on a daily basis for things like shopping, daytime events and running errands—It's a simple way to freshen up while on the go!

Lip stick is a little bit more of a commitment, but definitely worth it. There are a few challenges when wearing lipstick, like keeping the colour from getting on your teeth or chin and staying in your lip lines, but when done right, it's definitely the finishing touch to a high fashion look I usually rock a bold colour as a statement for events, meetings, and for fun nights out with my friends!

Lipstick and lip gloss are both items I must carry with me at all times. Depending on the situation, sometimes one can work better than the other, but both are great items to spice up your makeup routine!

Melinda's Beauty Blog: Makeup Quick Fix

FAN QUESTION: What is a common makeup, skincare, or hair mistake that you see teens often make but can be easily fixed?

Mistakes and trial and error are all part of what makes us human, we just have to acknowledge and learn from them. A makeup error I often see is mismatched foundation. It's especially obvious when there is a sharp difference in colour of the face and neck (blending is key!). If you're unsure if the colour is your match, take it to a makeup or drug store where a specialist can help you! With the weather changing, our skin colour often changes, too. Having 3 shades of face powder (one shade lighter, colour match, and one shade darker) can help you adjust the foundation without having to buy a new one, unless it's a big difference, of course!

A common skincare mistake I see is people touching their face or skin without washing their hands. Bacteria accumulates like crazy, and just because we can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there! Touching your face will spread those germs into your pours, making room for acne and skin problems that could otherwise easily be avoided!

A hair error I often see is girls straightening their hair too straight. Unless you have very curly hair, I recommend straightening from the crown of your head rather than at the root. By doing this you won't lose the natural volume that your hair already has. In addition to that, there are powders, sprays and shampoos to add extra volume in the event that straightening hair makes your locks look thinned out!

Melinda's Beauty Blog: The Secret to Long and Healthy Hair

FAN QUESTION: What do you do to get your hair so long and healthy?

Aside from keeping up with monthly hair trims, I have a couple of secrets to healthy hair growth success. Don't over wash your hair. Oil seems gross and annoying but it's actually providing moisture and the nutrients needed to have healthy hair. I also give myself head massages to massage the hair follicles and then I brush my hair out, spreading the natural oils to the rest of my hair!

Once a month I'll get messy and drench all of my hair in castor oil before showering. Castor oil is incredible for hair growth and will provide your scalp with extra vitamins and nutrients.

(Bonus Tip! Apply castor oil on your lash line before bed after washing your face for long, thick lashes!)

Melinda's Beauty Blog: Beating Your Winter Skin Blues

FAN QUESTION: What are some tips to beating winter skin? I'm always so dry and scaly feeling!

Winter winds can be harsh on our skin. The cold air dries it out and you can feel like you're braving non-stop skin issues until spring. One of my favourite (and inexpensive) cures is Petroleum jelly. It acts as lip balm, hair flyaway tamer, cuticle moisturizer, and treats wind burn. Not only is it a heavy source of moisture, but it's also instant relief for cracked skin. I wouldn't recommend slathering that on your face, however, as it has an oil base which can clog pores.

Drinking extra water is also key as hydration plays a big part in your skin. Too cold for water? Drink it hot! It'll double as warmth and comfort. Keeping a humidifier by your bed side at night can also help circulate moisture into the air, which, in turn, leaves your skin hydrated!

Melinda's Beauty Blog: Gym To Class

FAN QUESTION: What is your best go-to hairstyle when you have no time to do something fancy or special to it? Do you have a favourite hair accessory that you cannot live without?

My life consists of attending many fun events, but a lot of the time I'm not given much notice. With little time to book a hair appointment, I've mastered the art of simple high fashion hair styles that never let me down!

One of my favourite hairstyles is a pin-straight, slicked-back high pony tail. Sounds way more complicated than it is. Start with brushing your hair out, straightening it much as possible and tie your hair up wherever you desire (I suggest fairly high on your head). Then, using an empty mascara wand, either drench it in hair spray or dip it in gel. Comb back any fly always and stray hairs until it's perfectly sleek! Tip: This sharp look paired with cheek contour/blush is amazing as a look!

My favourite hair accessory would definitely be my thin jewel studded head band. Its base is elastic, so it works with my hair down, in a ponytail, and over my head like a crown. The added bling jazzes up even the most simple hair style. Tip: Get two and wrap one around your arm twice as a bracelet.

The best part about personal image and fashion is that it's YOURS! Play around with different styles, bend all of the "rules" and make it your own.

FAN QUESTION: Do you have any solutions for freshening up after gym class? I always just put my hair in a ponytail but it's getting very boring.

Growing up heavily involved in extracurricular physical activity, I'd often have a workout before school. Having the time to wash your hair isn't always easy, especially when hurrying off to an early morning class! Depending on the occasion, you can:

    1. Create alternate options for your hairstyle: You can try braids, a half up / half down style, or clipping your hair up to create a small poof!

    2. Accessories: Pull your hair back with headbands, clips, cute fashionable hats (if it's not against your school's dress code) or clip in hair extensions to create volume!

    3. Dry shampoo: One of my key products to freshen up my hair when needed, the aerosol spray consists of fine, non-coloured oil-absorbing powders. Spray it in, leave for about 30 seconds, flip your head upside down, shake your hair out by massaging your scalp lightly, brush your hair - et voil! A quick fix for sweaty hair!
