  • Degrassi Wrap-Up: Zombie, Pt. 2

    Posted on 04/05/2013 by Lisa

What did you think of "Zombie, pt. 2," a.k.a. the Degrassi spring finale? Let's talk. If you haven't seen the episode yet, watch it online before you read any further. *Spoilers below.*

    Maya
I have to start with Maya, because she went through so much in this episode. I'm so not a fan of this Harry guy. When he tried to get her to blow off her audition and make out in the prop closet at school, I was like, "Really, dude?" When she told him about throwing her cello in the dumpster, and he said, "That's so proper," I wanted to take him to the prop closet myself and lock him in there forever. Don't even get me started on "Just go with it." I never want to see this guy again.

I DO want to see lots more of Maya. (Shoutout to Olivia Scriven, the actress who plays Maya, for making that breakdown scene so emotionally intense.) I'm so glad Katie and her mom came home when they did. I think we all knew Maya had been trying to block her feelings out instead of dealing with them, but seeing everything come out at once was so heartbreaking. I hope finally opening up makes it easier for her to move on.

    Zig and Maya
Meanwhile, Zig seems like he wants to be there for Maya, but I was relieved when they had that talk about waiting until she was ready to date. Right now, Zig seems like the anti-Harry, so I'm starting to be OK with the idea of Zaya. Just take it slow, guys. Don't rush me.

    Drew and Clare
The election results are in... Were you surprised that Drew won? I would've voted for Clare, but after the election, when Drew asked her to be his "veep," I realized I like them as a team. They sort of balance each other out, right? I thought one of the cutest moments in this episode was when Drew found Clare crying and tried to comfort her. So awkward! But he gets points for trying.

    Clare
Connor's attempt to reunite Eli and Clare seems like a failure so far. It's strange to me that Clare was so worried about Eli a few weeks back, and now she feels like her own life is a total mess. I wonder if she would've been more likely to give Eli another chance if he'd had better timing? She was so upset about the election that she probably wasn't thinking clearly. When she told Eli, "We aren't a fairytale," I said "Whut?!?" Clare's always reading romantic fantasy novels, so I figured she'd be first in line for a happily ever after. (If you've seen the promo for the graduation special, I bet you're just as curious as I am about that shot of Eli and the carriage.)

    Jenna, Connor, and Alli
I'm glad that Connor, Jenna, and Alli are getting along again. All it took was knowing how they like their coffee! I just remembered the fight between Connor and Alli back in season 8, when she broke his pencil and he spit on her. Our little gifted kids have grown up so fast. :)

OK. Now let's go watch the promo for "The Time of My Life" again. It gives me chills.

  • Degrassi Wrap-Up: Zombie, pt. 1

    Posted on 03/29/2013 by Lisa

Doesn't Maya make a lovely zombie? Let's talk about the newest Degrassi. I have some questions for you. (If you missed it, watch the full episode online before you read any further. Spoilers below!)

    Maya and Zig
Do you think Zig and Maya should date? I'm torn. I feel like Maya might just be trying to prove that's she's over Cam (But is she really? I'm not so sure). When she asked Zig out, I got the sense that he still feels really guilty and messed up about what happened with Cam. So one hand, I think they'd be a terrible couple, and that the relationship would be a constant reminder of Cam's death. On the other hand, Maya and Zig went through a deeply traumatic experience together, and if they dated, they might relate to each other in a way that other people can't. Either way, they'd probably be a very emotional couple, right?

When Zig rejected Maya, she literally grabbed the next guy she saw and decided to flirt with him instead. (I sigh every time I think about it.) It's understandable that she wants to move on with her life, but I wish she had taken a few days to think about who else she might like, instead of sneaking off to a "senior party." We don't know much about Harry yet, but so far, I feel like Maya is just using him. She seems so self-destructive right now. Don't you just know she's going to regret posting that trashy video on FaceRange? I'm glad Katie and Zig seem worried about her, because I am, too.

    Drew and Clare
Do you think Drew should be student council president? My inner nerd girl thinks Clare would do a better job, but I also understand Dallas' argument that she's "way too serious." I love Clare, but when she said, "This is an important job and you're not smart enough to do it," she sounded so arrogant. No matter who gets elected, it's not like they have to do all the work on their own. They'll have help from the rest of the student council, and I'm sure there are all sorts of guidelines about what they are -- and aren't -- allowed to change. Drew could totally handle it. (Random side note: That scene where Drew accidentally swung Bianca into the wall? So funny.)

I loved Drew's line, "They don't call it a political party for nothing." Oh, Drew. He's definitely more popular than Clare, but do you think everyone who came to his party will vote for him? Or did they just show up for personal reasons, like Maya and Tristan with "Operation: Meet Cute Boys"? Everybody loves free snacks, but the real question is: Who gets your vote? I'm still leaning toward Clare, but she needs to stop insulting Drew. I feel like that kind of thing always backfires.

    Connor and Jenna
Meanwhile... Eli and Alli? Hahaha. Connor might be the worst matchmaker we've ever seen on Degrassi. I understand the impulse to set Alli up with someone (the last thing you want in a new relationship is someone else hanging around all the time), but Connor needs to get used to spending time with Alli. She and Jenna are practically sisters, given their current living situation. Alli is single, though, and I can't help wondering... If you could set Alli up with anyone at Degrassi, who would it be? I'm sure you're a better matchmaker than Connor.

And of course, I can't mention Jenna and Connor without saying something nice about them as a couple. I'm so glad that Jenna accepts that Connor is different, and that she likes him anyway. YAY for people who find love, against all odds!

"Zombie, pt. 2" airs next Friday at 9m et! Happy weekend, all. And here's a gif of Clare pushing Drew into a kiddie pool, just 'cause:

  • Degrassi Wrap-Up: Ray of Light, pt. 2

    Posted on 03/08/2013 by Lisa

What did you think of the newest Degrassi episode, "Ray of Light, pt. 2"? If you missed it, watch it here before you read any further.

I feel like so much happened during this episode, and it made me cry at least three times. Below are my thoughts on the latest Degrassi storylines. Please share yours in the comments!

    Eli in the shower
So much happened with Eli! I got all stressed out on his behalf during his NYU interview. (I went to NYU, but I never had to do an interview like that, because I transferred in.) When he talked to the interviewers about being bipolar, I was proud of him for being so honest -- and I loved when the interviewer lady complimented Romeo & Jules. I think Eli would like living in New York City as much as I did, so I'm going to be so disappointed if NYU finds out he took MDMA, showered in the girls' locker room, ran through the school naked, and hugged the principal (still naked).

The first time I cried was during the aftermath of that scene, in Simpson's office. I started tearing up when Mr. Simpson told Eli about the heartbreaking thing they have in common. And when Eli told Bullfrog, "Last year, it coulda been me in that greenhouse," I was a mess. It seems so unfair (and so realistic) that some people get help in time and some don't.

    Clare
Later in the episode, when Eli told Clare, "Cam's not the problem. You are." I surprised myself by not crying. I think I was too shocked to cry. I never expected Eli to be so harsh to Clare. Yes, she was being pushy to get him to talk about his feelings, but I wish he could've found a nicer way to say that he needed time alone. Clare looked SO hurt when she was sitting in the window at the end of the episode. (I have a feeling I'm not the only one who felt a sudden urge to hug my TV.)

    Connor and Jenna
So much happened with Connor and Jenna. Jenna and Connor had plans for a second date, but then Becky tried to get Jenna to date Luke instead (What a terrible idea!!), and then Connor punched Luke, and it seemed like Connor and Jenna were probably over... until Jenna told Connor, "I had more fun on our one date than any other date I've ever been on." When I heard that line, I totally started crying again. I never in a million years thought I would like Connor and Jenna together as much as I do. They make me want to build a cardboard space capsule in my living room. : )

    Katie and Jake
And so much happened with Katie and Jake. I am so glad that Katie decided to talk to the therapist, because it really seemed to help. I don't think trying to tear the garden blockade down was her smartest idea ever, but maybe all she and Jake really needed was detention together? It gave her a chance to really apologize, and it seemed like he was ready to hear it. When Katie said "You were the best boyfriend I ever had, and you didn't deserve what I did to you," I started crying AGAIN. And when Jake pulled out that flyer about the soccer coach job, I was so happy to realize that he'd been thinking about her, too.

I'm glad Katie decided to go for it, because the scene where she kicked a soccer ball around with Maya, a.k.a. "Chicken Little," was so cute.

    Watching the video yearbook
Of course, the video yearbook made me tear up. (You can watch that video online right here.) I'm a sucker for nostalgia!

This felt like such a life-changing episode for so many people. I really liked Ray of Light (except for the Eclare pain), even though it made me cry a whole bucket of tears. What did you think? Did you cry a lot at this one?

  • Degrassi Wrap-Up: Ray of Light, pt. 1

    Posted on 03/04/2013 by Lisa

Let's talk about Friday's Degrassi! If you haven't seen "Ray of Light, pt. 1" yet, watch it here. *Spoilers Below*

Friday on Degrassi, Eli went to a party, Maya went on stage, and Connor took Jenna to space. SPACE!

    Eli at the paint party
I understand why everyone's worried about Eli. Clare and his other friends are only trying to protect him, but by trying so hard not to upset him, they're only making things even worse for Eli. I appreciated when the psychologist told Eli he doesn't have to talk about it if that's not helpful for him. I wish Eli could've found a way to make it clear to Clare ("clear to Clare," that's fun to say, haha) that what he needed most was a fun date with her. I love Clare, but in this episode, her big concerned eyes were starting to stress me out.

I know Eli really needed a distraction, but MDMA seems like a dumb choice. I wish he could've just gone to the party and painted. I don't care if it sounds dorky -- creative projects always help me feel better. (I understand that the video yearbook is a creative project, too, but that one is so tied up in memories of Cam.) By the way, I saw a lot of Talia hate online after Friday's episode. I don't hate her, but I do wish she hadn't offered Eli drugs. *Sigh*

    Oh, Katie.
Will Jake and Katie get back together? I'm thinking no. Marisol's attempt to reunite Jake and Katie made me sigh, too. I think anyone who has ever been a part of an awesome foursome of couple-friends understands the impulse, but the reality is: Eventually, it's gonna end. Crying about it just makes it harder for everyone to move on with their lives.

I don't think Katie's in any shape to be dating anyone right now. What happened in Vegas definitely didn't stay there for her. She seems so messed up over the choices she made on that trip. When she tried to "protect" Maya at Little Miss Steaks, she's lucky that manager guy didn't call the police. She assaulted him! Not cool, Katie.

    Jenna + Connor = Love?!
Meanwhile, Jenna and Connor? I didn't see that one coming (except, you know, in the promos, haha). At first, she looked so reluctant to go on a date with him, but maybe it's good that she had low expectations, because it left room for her to be pleasantly surprised. That date with Connor is one she'll remember forever, and sharing a first kiss in space? Seriously cute. I feel like Jenna has enough life experience to appreciate what Connor has to offer. I hope this actually becomes a thing.

What did you think of this episode?

  • Jessica Tyler talks to TeenNick

    Posted on 08/01/2012 by Lisa

When Jessica Tyler stopped by the TeenNick offices a few weeks back, we asked her what she likes best about playing Jenna. Check out this interview!

What about you guys? What's your all-time favorite Jenna episode or scene?
I think my favorite Jenna scene so far might be the opening of "Closer to Free, pt. 1" when she plays guitar and sings about what's happening around her. "Jake doesn't hear me 'cause I'm not a tomato... Alli and Clare, where the heck did they go?" I laughed out loud at that, because I'm always making up songs about my day, my dog, and life in general. - Lisa

  • Closure for E-Clare?

    Posted on 08/18/2011 by Mary

SPOILERSSSSSSSS BENEATH. LOOK OUT. Watch "Extraordinary Machine, pt. 2" before reading.

The vast majority of people in our 'Does Eli have a shot?' Facebook poll yesterday said that while Clare isn't 100% over her feelings for Eli, she's definitely done dating him. And based on tonight's ep (and on E!'s interview with Aislinn Paul), that sounds about right to me.

I'm curious what the hardcore "no retreat, no surrender!" E-Clare shippers out there are feeling after this episode. Those final moments -- Clare putting a stamp of finality on things ("I'm just glad... he and I can go our separate ways."), followed by Clare making the following face:

Clare contemplates going separate ways from Eli on Degrassi
Eli and Clare can "go their separate ways" now. What would you call this emotion? Uncertainty? Peace? Regret? Wist?

... followed by Eli walking out of Degrassi feeling like he now finally has a shot at getting his life back under control, while Clare watches silently:

Degrassi's Eli, finally ready to move on
Eli, finally ready to move on. What's Clare feeling here?

Holy poignancy! Did any of the hardcore E-Clare fans get any sense of closure out of tonight's ep? Let us know in the comments...

Oh, and speaking of poignant. Oh my God. Jenna and KC watching Tyson get carried out of their lives? That was the worst. I know I wasn't the only one doing the ugly cry watching that scene. And Jenna just looked numb. I'm sure she has yet to really fully process her emotions about it, even if she feels sure they made the right decision. (Makes you think about what Holly J's birth mom went through when she gave her up -- wasn't Holly J eleven months old, too?)

What's crazy is: that scene destroyed me, and yet it can't even hold a candle to the true level of sadness that moment would rise to in real life.

It's especially hard because they had no happy options left. Raise Tyson, constantly struggling... to complete high school (if Jenna could ever really make it back at all), to make enough money to live on, to find any time to take care of their own needs (such as for instance, "having any fun")? Or give up Tyson, and break their own hearts to tiny, sad, little pieces in the process.

The only happy options they ever had existed before they ever got pregnant. They could have held off on sex, or they could have used protection every single time.

  • Love is complicated

    Posted on 08/17/2011 by Lisa

Relationships are tricky sometimes (as everyone working on Eli's play "Love Roulette" knows!), but they become infinitely more complicated when there's a baby involved. WARNING: Spoilers below. Don't read any further if you haven't seen the latest episode!

In "Extraordinary Machine, pt. 1," Eli seems more messed up over Clare than ever, and Owen calls Anya "pathetic" before ditching her at the pool hall. It's always hard to watch relationships crumble, but can you imagine if there were a baby involved in either of those situations? I'm cringing just thinking about it.

K.C. and Jenna both had so much going for them last year. He was a star athlete at Degrassi, and her music career seemed to be taking off. Then, Jenna found out she was pregnant, and they had a baby, and K.C. cheated, and Jenna hated being a teen mom, and they couldn't agree about what to do next.

If they weren't parents, K.C. and Jenna could just go their separate ways, but they've got someone else to think about -- Tyson. According to StayTeen.org, he could be in for a tough life. Children of teen mothers typically do worse in school than kids born to older parents. They're 50% more likely to repeat a grade, they're less likely to complete high school, and they get lower scores on standardized tests. I read that, and was like "But he's just a baby! A cute baby! Don't tell me he won't graduate!"

    Jenna, Tyson, and K.C.
Is Tyson better off with other parents?

Predict Tyson's Future... adoption or no adoption. What do YOU think is best for him?

    * If you could fast-forward time and see Tyson enroll at Degrassi, what do you think his life might be like if he's raised by Ed and Kathy? (Keep in mind, it's an open adoption, so he won't have to wonder who his birth parents are -- he'll know.)

    * What do you think Tyson might be like in high school if K.C. and Jenna raise him? Do you think he'll turn out ok?

  • OK. Jenna Has Officially Had Enough

    Posted on 08/11/2011 by Mary

SPOILERS BELOW; wait until you've seen Lose Yourself, pt. 2 to scroll down.

Just because Jenna hasn't had it hard enough lately, she gets dealt yet another blow: finding out that KC has been out cheating on her with Marisol while she attends to the never-ending, all-consuming needs of their baby.

Jenna and KC talk about putting Tyson up for adoption on Degrassi.
"We're struggling, we're hurting each other, and you're never here." - Jenna to KC

It looks like being overwhelmed, depressed, and now totally betrayed have pushed Jenna to consider what she was unwilling to before: maybe Tyson would be better off with adoptive parents. And come to think of it, it's interesting that K.C. was so resistant when Jenna brought up the possibility.

Why do you think KC wants to "make this work" so badly, when he doesn't actually want to be there to parent Tyson, and he's cheating on Jenna anyway? Does "making it work" come at a different price to him than it does to Jenna?

I doubt that KC is proud of himself, and the situation Jenna's in right now is so unbelievably stressful and painful, it seems like it has to be rare and extraordinary. But really, everything about what Jenna and KC are going through is a pretty predictable outcome for them. Since they were having sex but chose not to think about birth control, a pregnancy was basically inevitable -- sexually active teens who don't use protection have an 85% chance of pregnancy within a year*.

And since eight out of ten fathers don't marry the teen mothers of their babies*, their break-up is just as inevitable.

But that doesn't make it any less sad.

How do you guys feel about Jenna's decision to consider adoption?

    [* Stats according to StayTeen]

  • Jenna really needs a break.

    Posted on 08/10/2011 by Lisa

SPOILER WARNING: Don't read this post unless you've seen "Lose Yourself, Pt. 1."

On tonight's episode, Jenna seemed to be at her breaking point. As a teen mom with no way to pay for childcare, she's stuck at home all day, every day, and it's making her crazy.

"When I'm alone with Ty, I get so depressed. I need to see my friends... be normal." -Jenna

Jenna seems surprised to hear that K.C.'s mom never went back to school after having K.C., but that's pretty normal for a teen mom. According to Stayteen.org, less than half of teen mothers ever graduate from high school and fewer than two percent earn a college degree by age 30.

Parenthood is the #1 reason that teen girls drop out of school, and things aren't looking good for Jenna, in my opinion. She's already missed a ton of class. Even if K.C.'s mom helps out, Jenna can only go to school in the mornings -- and whenever she has to use her breast pump, she'll be missing more class. I want to believe things will settle down, but at this rate, how long will it take her to graduate? (Keep in mind, she's only back for "two classes a day, plus lunch.")

Prediction time: Do you honestly believe Jenna will graduate from Degrassi? Where do you think she and K.C. will be five years from now?

If Jenna and K.C. asked you for realistic advice, what would you tell them? I emphasize "realistic" only because I just remembered Drew's quote from last season, "My only solution involves a time machine and a big box of condoms." Not helpful, Drew!

    K.C., Jenna, and Tyson
If you were Jenna, would you keep going to school, leaky breasts and all?

  • The Week in Degrassi: Let's Review.

    Posted on 07/22/2011 by Mary

Drew and Bianca from Degrasi DREW AND BIANCA: It took some pretty extraordinary circumstances to do them in, but now it appears that Drianca are over. I talked to Luke Bilyk and Alicia Josipovic about the break-up, and they were as bummed as some of you guys out there about it:

    Alicia: We were SO UPSET.
Luke: After we did that scene, we were like, "So, Stefan. We're getting back together, right?"... It was really rude of Drew to do that, especially after all that Bianca's done for Drew.

What do you think... was Drew rude? And do you think they'll get back together?

KC AND JENNA: So, Jenna's stuck in a pile of poo-protectors while KC gets to go to school -- and now a job -- with friends. How do you think things will go for them long term? Will Kenna figure it out and stay together until baby Tyson is old and gray?

ANYA AND OWEN: After a rough week, Anya is going for a sure thing. Do you think the fact that Owen is so into her will be good for her self-esteem? Or will he find some way to make things even worse?

ANNND CAKE. The mighty mighty Lumberjake has ambled into our lives, eaten Mrs. Edwards' food, and kissed Clare just to shut her up. Do you think he really is as "low drama" as he seems?

NEXT WEEK: We meet Imogen! And Katie! Plus some Ziley story, and two of my favorite eps from all of Now or Never.

And don't forget -- the Degrassi mobile game has already had its first update (and I officially suck at Degrassi skee ball... but I'm really good at making Eli like me.) It's only $0.99 in the app store at iTunes - just search for Degrassi.
