  • Songs from Degrassi: "Can't Tell Me Nothing, pt. 1"

    Posted on 03/02/2012 by Ryanmcl

Here's info from Degrassi's music team about how they chose the songs used in this episode.

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven't seen the new episode yet, go watch it before you read this post!

    TeenNick's Degrassi

"Hit the Ground Running by These Electric Lives
While Katie's playing soccer. Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"Though it's actually a love song, the feel and energy and tension of the instrumentation was the reason for this placement. Sometimes the lyrics and meaning of a song can be put aside in favor of its strength and imagination. The composition of the music in this song adapted to the scene quite well."

What song was playing during the Tori/Maya Brawl? Here's info from Degrassi's music team about how they chose the songs used in this episode.

    TeenNick's Degrassi

    "Astronaut" by Robyn Dell'Unto
Clare and Jake almost have sex. Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"Robyn's music is dreamy and elusive, and was perfect for this scene. We had no idea where the scene was heading, and we felt the nervous tension. Cutting through it with Robyn's song was like wrapping the scene in a warm duvet blanket. It felt awkward, but still comfortable."

"Because I'm Awesome" by The Dollyrots
Tori and Maya fight in class.
"This song had been on our radar for a while (in fact, we placed it before, in Season 10). This wasn't a serious fight scene -- we wanted to create a bit of a ridiculous atmosphere. We decided to use the song again, because, well, it's awesome."

What song was playing during Fiona's party? Here's info from Degrassi's music team about how they chose the songs used in this episode.

    TeenNick's Degrassi

"All I Want to Believe In" by Modernboys Moderngirls
As everyone comes back to school. Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"As we come back to school, everyone is a little older and a little wiser, and that's what we aimed for with this song. The Toronto indie band Modernboys Modergirls paced the scene for a warm welcome back."

"Yo Hello Hooray (Everyday)" by USS
    Fiona's party music.
"There's some tension in the scene that is lifted a bit by the music, but not too much -- it still needs to feel a bit awkward. Fiona is, after all, trying to make new friends."

    "The Lights" by Fred
    Tin foiling the cafeteria.
"The song's instrumentation sold this placement. The scene needed something magical or unknown, something that would seem surreal. The prank is pretty epic, and the music makes the kids feel invincible."

    TeenNick's Degrassi

"The Sun Shines At Night" by The Submarines
The closing moments of the episode, as Clare and Jake turn out their lights Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"We had our ears on this song for a while, waiting for that special moment. Not only was it the right time of the day, but the lyrics smashed into Clare and Jake's minds -- both on either side of the wall -- both feeling the same thing. The wall still separates them, but the song means there's a shred of light in the dark."

    "Celebrate Love" by Michou
The wedding scene. Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"Such a sweet song for such a bittersweet moment. The song is about more than just Clare and Jake, it's about the juxtaposition of the marriage behind them, and the breakup before them. There's a celebration in the birth of one love and the death of another -- the song works on so many levels here."

    "Legendary" by Mr. Downstairs
As they're driving away from the cabin. Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"This song really feels like a culmination of a whole story, and cabins are such great places to get to know one another. When they leave, we're leaving an entire story behind, and the song gives us a nostalgic feeling, wishing we had one more day up there."

  • Songs from Degrassi: "Dead & Gone, pt. 2"

    Posted on 09/01/2011 by Ryanmcl

DEGRASSI SPOILERS below if you haven't seen the new episode yet. But if you watched and need to know what songs were playing, the generous Degrassi Music Team is happy to share the info and the stories behind how the songs got there!

    TeenNick's Degrassi

    "Can't Breathe" by Fefe Dobson
Prom slow dance . Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"Stefan Brogren, the director for this episode, was heavily involved in the music selections for the prom. We sent him this song when he was looking for a tune for the dance later on, and he said it would be perfect for the slow dance. Lo and behold, the graduates danced their last slow with Fefe Dobson, a perfect meld of sad, glad, and looking forward to moving on."

"Not In Love" by Crystal Casltes ft. Robert Smith
Prom dance, Vince shows up. Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"This song was Stefan Brogren's choice, an homage to original version by Platinum Blonde, recorded in 1985. Crystal Castles and Robert Smith of The Cure re-recorded this version flawlessly and captured the essence of our decade, the essence that translated perfectly into the ending of one of the most memorable Degrassi crews ever."

    "Always" by Neverending White Lights
Everything is made right. Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"Another of Stefan Brogren's top-choice bands, we were thrilled to find a spot for a NWL song in Degrassi. This is a special moment, where we realize everything is going to be fine, but also that new troubles are just around the corner with Katie, Drew and Bianca, who knows what'll happen next."

"Young Blood" by The Naked & Famous
End of episode, Sav says goodbye to Degrassi. Check the Degrassi page for a sample.
"The bookend of Degrassi: Now or Never, The Naked & Famous acted almost thematically through the season, and so it only felt right to end the summer with the song that began the school year. The Naked & Famous are so thrilled with the fan reaction that they were very happy to let us have this song again, and we're incredibly grateful to have worked with such a great band. Notice the lyrics as Sav sees the cement, and when he walks away afterwards."
