  • Degrassi 101: Catch Up On Season 13!

    Posted on 03/14/2014 by Rachel1016

Hey, new Degrassians on the block! Looking for a crash course in all the Degrassi drama? It's time to get up to speed on the BFFs, 'ships, and feuds that are dominating the hallways. We've also got some fresh episodes coming up, so here's everything you need to know about Season 13 (and MORE)!

    Degrassi 101

Drew is Degrassi's class president, and he's kind of a screw-up, but most of the time tries to do the right thing.

    Degrassi 101

He's also super close with his VP Clare, who's dating Eli. But ever since Eli went off to college, their relationship has gotten kinda rocky.

    Degrassi 101

Eli and Clare went on a break, and Clare kissed Drew. Even though she's back with Eli, she pretty much has secret feelings for Drew now.

    Degrassi 101

    Uh oh.

    Degrassi 101

Alli is BFF with Clare and Jenna. She's a science genius and her lab partner is Dallas, who is a total jock and BMOC (Big Man On Campus).

    Degrassi 101

But he's also crushing on Alli. Hard. She really likes him as a friend, but she's not sure about taking the next step.

    Degrassi 101

    Degrassi 101

Jenna is dating Connor. And they're a super-cute couple, but sometimes, Connor can be a little socially awkward.

    Degrassi 101

And then there's Maya. She's in Grade 10. And she's dating Miles, who's kind of a bad boy, but they really like each other.

    Degrassi 101

Actually, they love each other. Like, they officially said the L-word, so you know it's serious.

    Degrassi 101

Miles also used to date Zoe, who's a former TV star. She and Maya have never really gotten along, but they sorta made up because they're both BFFs with Tristan, who has the best one-liners.

    Degrassi 101

    Degrassi 101

Maya was put in the Remedial Room with this guy, Zig. He used to be in love with her, but now he's kinda shady and mean to her.

    Degrassi 101

And then there's Imogen. She's a quirky, artsy girl, who's also into girls. She recently became friends with Becky Baker, who might actually be into Imogen…but she's not sure!

Once you've committed these important facts to memory, check out all of the Degrassi character bios for more info on all the guys and gals.

  • Melinda's Beauty Blog: Quick Fix To Common Makeup Mistakes

Melinda's Beauty Blog: Makeup Quick Fix

You know and love Melinda Shankar as Alli Bhandari on Degrassi, but if you've followed her outside of the show, you've probably noticed she has a knack for style and beauty. We are so excited because Melinda has offered to share her image expertise with us in a brand-new beauty blog! Over the next few weeks, Melinda will periodically pop in to answer questions you sent us via Facebook and Twitter about hair, makeup, skincare and everything in between. She's taking to the blog to share all of her secrets, so stay tuned!

FAN QUESTION: What is a common makeup, skincare, or hair mistake that you see teens often make but can be easily fixed?

Mistakes and trial and error are all part of what makes us human, we just have to acknowledge and learn from them. A makeup error I often see is mismatched foundation. It's especially obvious when there is a sharp difference in colour of the face and neck (blending is key!). If you're unsure if the colour is your match, take it to a makeup or drug store where a specialist can help you! With the weather changing, our skin colour often changes, too. Having 3 shades of face powder (one shade lighter, colour match, and one shade darker) can help you adjust the foundation without having to buy a new one, unless it's a big difference, of course!

A common skincare mistake I see is people touching their face or skin without washing their hands. Bacteria accumulates like crazy, and just because we can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there! Touching your face will spread those germs into your pours, making room for acne and skin problems that could otherwise easily be avoided!

A hair error I often see is girls straightening their hair too straight. Unless you have very curly hair, I recommend straightening from the crown of your head rather than at the root. By doing this you won't lose the natural volume that your hair already has. In addition to that, there are powders, sprays and shampoos to add extra volume in the event that straightening hair makes your locks look thinned out!

Hailing from Canada's capital, Ottawa, Melinda Shankar joined the cast ofDegrassiin its eighth season as Sav Bhandari's little sister, Alli. Prior to this, she did runway and print modeling. Melinda's passion for beauty has led her to a new position as CEO of Miss Conception image consulting.

  • '90s Are All That: Our Favorite Moments from 'Hey Dude!'

Posted on 03/13/2014 by Rachel1016 and Laura Mac

    Hey Dude

Yippy-ta-ya-yea! Better watch out for those man-eating jack rabbits, and that killer cacti! Cowboys and the wild western frontier were all the rage back in the '90s -- Walker, Texas Ranger, City Slickers, Wild, Wild West, you name it. It's no surprise that Nick hopped right onto the saddle to take part in that cowboy craze with Hey Dude. Check out our favorite moments from the Bar None Dude Ranch!

Ah, battle of the sexes: the age-old question of who's more awesome! When Ted and Danny challenge Brad and Melody to a series of competitions around the ranch, there's more than pride at stake! With the threat of a week's worth of extra chores if they lose, the two teams prepare for a one-on-one horse race. "Guys! Guys! Guys! Guys! Go!" "Girls! Girls! Girls! Girls! *air kiss* Girls!"

It's a dark and stormy night (wait, is this an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?), and the Bar None gang decide to pass the time by telling ghost stories. After Ted scares the bajeezus out of Brad, she plans to get him back with the help of Melody, Buddy and Danny. They concoct an elaborate scheme to scare Ted, but, too bad, it looks like he knows every trick in the book!

This is it! The episode we were all waiting for! It was a long time coming for Ted and Brad to finally put their petty arguing aside and realize that, yeah, they like each other. Really like each other. But after their first date, cool-guy Ted gets a little discouraged when he makes a few slip-ups. Can he muster the courage to kiss her goodnight?

Ted might be away at summer school, but the mischief and shenangians at Bar None didn't leave with him! The new kid on the block, Jake, swipes a secret comic strip drawn by Danny called "The Dud Ranch" -- it's based on everyone who works at the ranch! Jake thinks it's hilariously snarky and offers to sell it to the local newspaper, but when he realizes no one is safe from embarrassment, he second guesses himself.

Everybody's favorite goofball is back! When the Bar None gang all get the sneaking suspicion that somebody is watching them, they embark on a hunt for the so-called "Bar None Stalker." Turns out, it's just our guy Ted trying to mess with everyone, as usual. The gang is thrilled to see him…but Ted's not so thrilled to see Kyle (the new new kid) flirting it up with Brad. Looks like Ted's still got a little soft spot for her.

What are some of your favorite memories from Hey Dude? Share them with us in the comments!

  • Degrassi Recap: 'Unbelievable Parts 1 + 2'

    Posted on 03/12/2014 by Rachel1016

Degrassians, thank you for joining us last night for a truly heart-wrenching and pivotal episode. There is much to discuss and reflect upon, and we're here to break it down with you. As always, if you haven't seen "Unbelievable" Parts 1 & 2, watch the hour-long episode right here before reading our recap.

    Degrassi: Unbelievable

The episode began with Zoe waking up in Miles' pool house the morning after his outrageous party, with little recollection of what happened. When Miles' little sister Frankie woke her up, she showed her a series of compromising photos that ended up online. Although Zoe seemed confident that the photos were only a blip on the radar (nothing that couldn't be erased by a stellar performance at the Degrassi Sing Off), this was only the beginning.

    Degrassi: Unbelievable

As the photos began to spread around the school, Becky pitched a story to Degrassi TV about the dangers of underage drinking. At first, she was determined to prove herself a serious journalist by getting to the bottom of what really happened at Miles' party. But when an anonymous person using the pseudonym "The Watcher" posted a video of Zoe, drunk on the floor in nothing but her bikini, Becky realized that there was more to the story. In the video, it appeared that two boys tried to jokingly harass Zoe as she lay near-unconscious. Becky realized that the real message here wasn't just about holding teens accountable for their actions under the influence. It was about how no one, under any circumstances, should be taken advantage of.

    Degrassi: Unbelievable

Becky, Drew and Imogen sifted through the photo evidence from the party, and were determined to figure out who took the video. They couldn't seem to get a lead on anybody until The Watcher posted another anonymous video containing security camera footage of Miles and Winston carrying Zoe into the pool house. Now, it appeared that the two boys were lead suspects.

    Degrassi: Unbelievable

Later on, at the Degrassi Sing Off, Zoe, Frankie and Keisha took the stage. In the middle of their performance, however, Zoe started having flashbacks to the party and became distraught by the fear of what may or may not have happened to her in the pool house. She quickly ran off stage and went to the doctor to get some answers. There, she learned that she was sexually assaulted.

    Degrassi: Unbelievable

Becky noticed as Zoe became increasingly tormented by the incident, and she realized that she couldn't keep the story to herself any longer. Becky informed Principal Simpson of her suspicions about Miles and Winston, and he immediately decided to involve the police. When the police questioned the boys, however, Winston was able to pull up a time code in the security footage to prove that it wasn't them in the assault video. So, if it wasn't Miles and Chuey, who was it?

    Degrassi: Unbelievable

Eventually, Grace came forward as The Watcher and told Becky, Imogen, and Drew that she wanted to help them figure out who was in the video. They determined that Becky's brother Luke and his friend (who, incidentally, was the same guy that tried to put his hands on Maya in 'Barely Breathing') were involved. And even though Becky didn't want to believe that her brother could be capable of such a disgusting act, she found the assault video on his phone. Luke Baker was Zoe's attacker. And Becky was dazed and devastated.

Zoe meanwhile learned that the pep rally for the basketball team was cancelled because of the accusations. Zoe didn't make the claims (she had, in fact, kept pretty quiet about the whole thing), but angry students started spreading nasty rumors that Zoe wasn't actually assaulted. They said that she willingly had sex with the two boys in the video, regretted it, and then decided to tell the police that she was violated. It's important to understand that Zoe was not only being ostracized by her peers for the events that took place, but they were now falsely accusing her of making the whole thing up. And despite her reputation for getting entangled in controversy, Zoe was the victim here. The victim who was being portrayed as the villain.

    Degrassi: Unbelievable

After it came to light that Luke was in the video, he approached Zoe to ask her to drop the accusations and "just forget everything." He even dared to suggest that no one would believe her side of the story anyway: "I'm a good Christian guy, I'm a hockey star," he said. But right before the basketball game, Zoe saw Luke carelessly flirting in the background, she charged toward him. She mustered enough infuriated strength to announce in front of everyone that he was other person in the video. He sexually assaulted her. And before he could try to defend himself, Becky jumped in and confirmed that her brother was indeed guilty. As swift as a coursing river, he was carried away by police.

    Degrassi: Unbelievable

The next day, Zoe walked in to school as Miles, Maya, Tristan, Drew, and Dallas waited for her. They promised to have her back and to be there for her as she began her recovery process. But before taking Miles' hand, Zoe turned around and saw Becky. She walked over to her and thanked her for coming forward, for speaking up against her own brother. And even though Becky said it wouldn't be easy, she knew she had to do what was right. In that moment, we felt our hearts swell to burst.

Zoe's story in this episode sheds light on the complicated issue of sexual assault. It can happen to all kinds of people, and all-too often blame is assigned to the victim. Situations like these aren't easy to talk about, but if you or someone you know have been affected by sexual assault, there are resources available and it is never too late to get help. Tell someone you trust. You don't have to deal with this alone. Call the Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE or go to www.rainn.org.

    Fresh Artist: Rixton

If you've never heard of Rixton, let us enlighten you: The four-piece pop-punk outfit comprised of Jake, Danny, Charley, and Lewi, hail from Manchester, UK and have a sunny sound that is every bit roll-your-windows-down and cry-your-eyes-out good.

The guys came on to the scene with a viral video for their song "Make Out" which parodied a few iconic videos (oh, you know, from like Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Miley Cyrus) but they're about to make some serious waves all on their own. Each of the four lads sings, they all play instruments, and they've got personality for DAYS. Check out our exclusive Q&A with the latest Fresh Artist below!

    1. If you had to describe your sound in three words that begin with the letter "S" what would they be?
    Sexy. Sultry. Super.

    2. Every single member of the band sings. How do you think that sets you apart from other acts? Have you ever done an impromptu a cappella performance?
It shows our overall musicality. One of the songs on our album is a capella.

    3. What was it like opening up for Justin Bieber at Brooklyn's Barclays Center with just 24 hours' notice? Did you even have time to get nervous?
    It was mad!

    4. What is one moment so far in your career that's made you wonder, "How did we get here?"
We met Tom Hanks and Will Smith recently. We all look up to those men and being in their presence was immense!

    5. In addition to your original music, you've made a name for yourself on YouTube with brilliant covers of popular songs. Of the famous artists you've covered, with whom would you like to collaborate most?
We'd love to work with Drake.

    6. The last question's for Lewi: You're rarely seen without your backpack on, so what's in it?
    You'll never know!

    RAPID FIRE QUESTIONS
And now, the rapid fire round! We asked Rixton a series of silly questions, and here's the first thing that came to mind!

Melinda's Beauty Blog: The Secret to Long and Healthy Hair

FAN QUESTION: What do you do to get your hair so long and healthy?

Aside from keeping up with monthly hair trims, I have a couple of secrets to healthy hair growth success. Don't over wash your hair. Oil seems gross and annoying but it's actually providing moisture and the nutrients needed to have healthy hair. I also give myself head massages to massage the hair follicles and then I brush my hair out, spreading the natural oils to the rest of my hair!

Once a month I'll get messy and drench all of my hair in castor oil before showering. Castor oil is incredible for hair growth and will provide your scalp with extra vitamins and nutrients.

(Bonus Tip! Apply castor oil on your lash line before bed after washing your face for long, thick lashes!)

  • Degrassi Recap: 'Basket Case'

    Posted on 03/05/2014 by Rachel1016

It's that time again, Degrassians! We've got another all-new episode under our belts, and it's time to break down the moments that left us, as usual, wading in a pool of feels. Last night's episode was chock full of the capital D Drama that makes Degrassi sohellip;Degrassi, so if you haven't seen the full episode of "Basket Case," watch it online before reading our recap!

    NO PARTIES, NO GIRLS
    Degrassi: Basket Case

As Miles' parents were on their way out of town, they called upon Drew (of all people) to look after Miles in order to make sure he didn't get into any trouble. Miles was pretty annoyed at his parents for hiring Babysitter Drew and, really, we can't blame him. I mean, not only do we have every right to question Drew's capacity to supervise, but Mr. H was treating Miles like a baby when, really, he had been acting like a child himself.

Miles still hadn't forgotten about his father's affair. And because his father was doing whatever he wanted, Miles decided that he had license to do the same. In other words, it was time for a party.

After ditching Drew (by fooling him into thinking he'd have to run errands for Mr. H all evening), Winston quickly spread the word about the Hollingsworth rager. And the sun hadn't even set by the time the Degrassi student body gathered around Miles' pool, red Solo cups in hand, Icona Pop blasting. Everyone was having themselves a time, but there was one person in particular who especially enjoyed herself.

    Degrassi: Basket Case

As the party got rowdier, Maya walked in and made it clear she was upset at Miles' carelessness. His relationship with his father was already strained and she knew that lashing out in this way was a mistake, no matter how much Miles believed that Mr. H deserved it.

    Degrassi: Basket Case

To make matters worse, Miles was already pretty inebriated at this point. Maya tried to talk to him, but after one too many drunken slurs, she decided to leave. Miles was bent out of shape.

    Degrassi: Basket Case

As Miles stumbled his way to an empty couch to sulk, Zoe walked over pretty intoxicated herself. She removed her dress, left only in a bathing suit, sat on Miles' lap, pitied his fight with Maya, and proceeded to pass out with her arms around him.

As if things hadn't already gotten out of hand, Winston and Miles had no idea what to do with unconscious Zoe. After Winston snapped a photo of the three of them to use as "ammo" against Zoe, they picked her up and brought her into the pool house. Suffice it to say, they acted with really impaired judgment.

WAKING UP IS THE HARDEST PART
    Degrassi: Basket Case

You know what they say about dreams: You act out what you can't real in life.

    Degrassi: Basket Case

    Degrassi: Basket Case

After waking up from a fantasy dream in which Clare got pretty steamy with Drew, she admitted to Alli that she was crushin' hard. Like real hard. Alli made it clear that Clare's dream could have real-life implications (you are NOT innocent when you dream!), and they both resolved that Clare would have to keep her distance.

Her willpower didn't last very long, however, because when Drew asked for Clare's help with the campaign materials that Miles duped him into getting (right, that happened), she barely hesitated before saying, "Yes, Drew. For you, anything." (Okay, those weren't her exact words, but they might as well have been.)

    Degrassi: Basket Case

Drew and Clare spent the entire day together, and as Drew dropped Clare off at her house, she finally got real: She admitted that she was having "too much fun" hanging out with him. And just as they were about to actually confront the maybe feelings they had for each other, Eli showed up at Clare's door. Yes, that Eli! Drew quickly assessed the situation and let Clare go. But, lest we assume the tension ended there, homeboy looked just about as bummed as every kid on the day after Christmas:

    Degrassi: Basket Case

    BEND, NOT BREAK
    Degrassi: Basket Case

After finding out about Alli's violent attack, Dallas decided to stake out Leo's home. With his arms crossed and his hood up, it looked like he had every intention of giving Leo a taste of his own medicine.

But when he heard his son Rocky's voice, Dallas was reminded that fighting violence with violence wasn't the right thing to do. And it's not an example he'd want to set for his son.

Alli confessed to Dallas that she wished there was a way to make Leo realize just how much he hurt her. So, he accompanied Alli to Leo's house, where she was able to express to Leo face-to-face just how much turmoil he put her through, and how his severe anger management problems had the potential for an even worse outcome. Dallas was right by her side the entire time, but Alli mustered enough strength to say her piece: "You beat me, but you didn't break me."

    Degrassi: Basket Case

Of course, the confrontation wasn't easy for Alli. The weight of that painful emotion left her in tears, but even though she is clearly still deeply wounded, Dallas' support helped her get the closure she deserved.

    Degrassi: Basket Case

And as she sat on the curb, she said, "You're one of the good ones, Dallas." :`)

That about wraps it up for this week, Degrassians! Tell us what you thought about the episode in the comments below!
