  • Undeclared: FREE MONEY!

    Posted on 06/19/2011 by Mary

Hey kids! Did you know that once you get to college, banks give you FREE MONEY? It's true! I saw it on Undeclared! (Processing fees not included; finance charges may apply; please call to verify eligibility.)

Ah, the freshman year credit card. So much freedom... for about a month, until you hit your credit limit, and suddenly you have no more spending money because you have to pay your credit card bill... and then they raise your limit! And you have freedom again! Until two years later when you suddenly look at your bill and realize you owe $6000 and it's costing you $100 a month in finance charges and it's going to take you 12 years to pay it off if you only pay the minimum which is all you can afford and you can't even remember what you bought with that $6000 because you don't even feel like you own anything nice and you suspect it was pretty much just $6000 worth of tacos because that one taco place took credit cards.

Damn you, taco place! Damn you and your delicious credit tacos!

  • Do you like Buffy? Or Quizzes?

    Posted on 06/18/2011 by Lisa

You might like the "Which Buffy the Vampire Slayer Character Are You?" quiz. It says I'm Xander, which I didn't expect -- though I should've, since I wrote the quiz.

Which Buffy the Vampire Slayer Character Are You?Thinking of myself as Xander cracks me up because I'm about to go swimming in a pink bikini (and I'm NOT picturing Xander in one! I REFUSE to see that mental image.) Buuut now that I think about it, Xander does join the swim team in the "Go Fish" episode, which we'll be showing on TeenNick, Thursday at 10pm. Maybe we have more in common than I thought?

Take the quiz, and let me know who you get. In the meantime, I'll be swimming and trying really hard not to picture Xander in a pink bikini.

  • One reason to break up before college.

    Posted on 06/16/2011 by Mary

Every year, thousands of recently graduated high school seniors face the same question: Should we break up before we head off to college?

Eric on Undeclared is perhaps the most vivid (and funny) example of why the answer tends to be yes:

True, not every boyfriend is as psychotically clingy as Eric and his "dreaming of you" pillow cases... but then again, I'm sure many boyfriends and girlfriends have surprised themselves with how psychotically clingy they sounded when trying to cope with hundreds of miles of distance, the specter of a thumping college hook-up scene, and their fear of the unknown.

It's never all that popular to say so, because it's hard to hear for some couples, but a lot of colleges even go so far as to tell all their freshmen during orientation: just break up.

The reasons why? Well, basically because the likely scenarios are: one of you cheats and feels horrible about it and takes way too long to admit it because it's so easy to hide it from so far away; you're in totally different surroundings and grow apart anyway; or you're so chained to your long-distance relationship that you don't experience all that college has to offer.

We all know the odds are against anyone ending up with their high school bf/gf long term... but what we don't often hear is that: many of those who DID end up with their high school sweetheart took a break at some point and saw other people and figured out that they really were right for each other. AND many of those who never took that break from their high school sweetheart end up having a crisis at some point in their marriage over the fact that they've never really been apart and don't know what else is out there. Even if they're right for each other... they just don't know for sure because they've never tested it.

Sermon over... I mostly just think Eric is hilarious. And I also think it's veddy interesting that Jason Segal seems to play variations on this lovesick boyfriend character a lot.

  • Freaks and Geeks: Have Some Haverchuck

    Posted on 06/14/2011 by Mary

Amazing Freaks and Geeks episode on tonight... the one where Sam and his friends switch out the keg at Lindsay's party with a non-alcoholic one, so that the freaks don't trash the Weir's house.

Reason one that this episode rules: Haverchuck.

Reason two: Nick and Millie's unexpected Doobie Brothers duet -- followed by a classic Early Seth Rogen moment. (Click to watch the clip.

And reason three: the school assembly about designated drivers. You'll have to watch the episode for that one.

    God I love this show.

  • Degrassi: Behind the Fireworks

    Posted on 06/10/2011 by Mary

We have a new Ryan this summer (everyone should have a Ryan -- they're very good to have around) and he took some of the behind-the-scenes footage from the Degrassi: Now or Never teaser shoot (aka: the fireworks promo) and put this together for you.

    Wasn't that thoughtful of him?

I like it. Particularly watching Munro, Jahmil, and Ray doing their little bonfire dance.

Oh, summer. I hope you have lots of bonfires in you this year, because I want to set off bottle rockets with my friends and feel nice nice like in the video.

  • iParty with Victorious: Orange Carpet Style

    Posted on 06/10/2011 by Lisa

A special crossover episode of iCarly and Victorious airs Saturday at 8pm on Nick. The episode is called "iParty with Victorious," and Nick threw a party to celebrate the premiere.

Here's Miranda Cosgrove and Victoria Justice, all prettied up:

Jennette McCurdy (iCarly) and Daniella Monet (Victorious), looking classy:

So... whose outfit do you like best? I think Victoria's pants are cute. (Swimming pool blue is my favorite color.)

  • Buffy: First Spike Episode!

    Posted on 06/08/2011 by Mary

Tonight at 10... the Buffy episode "School Hard" is on -- the one where we first meet the platinum-haired, "thorough, goal-oriented", scary-hot vampire slayer-slayer who "doesn't stop until everything in his path is dead" (orrrr until he falls in love with a slayer... spoiler alert!) Spike, aka William the Bloody, aka this guy:

Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    Spike, the Vampire

Not to be confused with the other Spike, from Degrassi:

    Spike Nelson from Degrassi High
Spike, the original Degrassi teen mom

Even though they both have truly inspired hair from the best pages of the '80s. But one tortured his victims with railroad spikes and has a creepy undead girlfriend named Drusilla, and one was a teen mom who gave birth to Emma and married Principal Simpson. Different strokes, different folks.

We know this can be a difficult distinction to remember; let us know if you have any questions.

  • The Week in Buffy.

    Posted on 06/04/2011 by Mary

The beginnings of shows are so hard to do well. Because you have to set up so many characters, and the setting, and the tone, and no one in the audience really knows anything about the show yet so it's like you REALLY have to get everything across super quickly or they stop caring. Plus I mean, the first episodes are shot while everyone on the cast pretty much just met, and their chemistry is still gelling -- does chemistry 'gel'? Did I just mix my goop metaphors? -- and the writers don't yet know what their actors are best at doing and... it's a lot of work and a lot of pressure, and whenever a first episode is any good, it's basically a miracle.

When Buffy first came out, the promos they showed on its original network tried to sell it as this dreary horror show instead of a... what's the genre I'm looking for... philosophical comedy with moments of deep darkness, hot vampires, and story brilliance far beyond that of any other high school allegory ever made? So it took me so long to listen to my friends -- grown-ass male friends, btw -- who were like "BUT YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT."

So anyway... YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT. You're safe now, we've been showing two episodes six nights a week so we're already a good chunk into the first season, chemistries are gelled, and moments like the end of this clip are happening:

Of course, there's even more better-er coming up... 'cause ohhh boy was that giant praying mantis weird. I'm noticing that the monsters in these first episodes far, far out-cheese what's to come. (Oh my God, I can't wait until you see the episode "Hush". Buffy fans, back me up!)

The episode that clip is from is on tonight. AND so's the one where Angel and Buffy have their first kiss. Happy Saturday to YOU!
