A special message from The-Sarah

So, you might remember The-Sarah -- who is The Head Lady in Total Charge of The N (well, "General Manager" is her official title, but she's nowhere near as boring as that title sounds) -- from that podcast Seth and I did with her where she started to tell us about all the awesome things coming to The N in 2008 (btw... Queen Bees? Oh. My God. Everyone in the office is freaking out over how good it is. You're stoked. I will elaborate another day.)

Anyway, I have a special message from The-Sarah to pass along:

The-Sarah

All of us at The N have been absolutely overwhelmed by your reaction to the news about South of Nowhere. We so deeply appreciate your passion for and dedication to the show -- it has meant a lot to us as a network, just like we know the show means a lot to you.

While sorting through the mountains of feedback that you have shared with us about the show , we realized that if we really want to give South the proper send-off it deserves, we're going to need more time. So we decided to move the premiere date to the fall. I know it's going to be hard to wait for the final season , but we've planned a lot of special material (retrospectives, a final webisode, podcasts and more) to say goodbye to this beautiful, important series, and we really don't want to rush it. It is out of respect for the show and for you, the fans, that we're trying to give it the time and attention it deserves.

Also, this way, when the series airs in the fall, it will be playing with a new season of Degrassi. That means it has a chance to be seen by a lot more people, and I think we can all agree that the more people that see South of Nowhere -- that learn about these characters and their lives and loves and struggles -- the better.

Thanks for loving South of Nowhere as much as we do. We promise to work hard to honor the final season this fall.

- The-Sarah

There you have it. I can only add that everyone around the office is really dedicated to making all the extra stuff Sarah mentioned the best it can be. We know how much it matters to you, so we're putting our hearts into it.

Luv,
The-Mary

  • South of Nowhere is unique. I've never seen anything else on tv before that paints such an honeset and genuine portrait of sexuality and the adolescent experience. SON poignantly captures the harsh realities of sexuality and race, but does so in a way that is sensitive and offers a wonderful sense of hope to its viewers.

The issues south of nowhere deals with are so important and universal, yet rarely touched upon in other shows. And these matters do not solely deal with sexuality. The feeling of not really knowing exactly who you are during high school, the desire to forge an identity of which people will be accepting of, the sense of loneliness even experienced sometimes by those who are popular, and the heartache of abandonment.

Also, South of Nowhere's tendency to reverse both racial and sexual steroetypes if refreshig and should be rewarded. South of Nowhere's character development and character complexity is also excellent. Spencer, who is initially rather insescure about her sexuality truly grows to accept it, as well as be proud and open. Ashley, despite her mistakes and shortcomings, and sometimes ill-tempered nature is still caring and sensitive at heart and comes to realize that Spencer is who she truly wants. Over time, Madison becomes more accepting as well and we come to realize that's there may be more to her than meets the eye.

As a bisexual male, who is now more comfortable with his sexuality (in part due to south of nowhere) I will say that I felt rather trapped in high school in the sense that I felt I really couldn't reveal my sexuality to anyone. But then, all of a sudden, south of nowhere came along and just seemed so unconditionally supportive. I realized that there are other people who truly realize (ie- the writers, etc) how nervewracking it can be to acknowledge that one is gay or bi and how scary it can be to come out to one's family and friends. Not only has this show helped me feel better about myself, but it has also altered the opinions of various parents and people who initially harbered homophobic sentiments.

As much as I love south of nowhere, I sometimes wonder if I should actually like the show as much as I do conidering that I'm male. I then think, however, that so many of the issues that Spencer and Ashley deal with apply to anyone who is gay or bisexual- male or female. While not all gay or bisexual males may hold this view, I personally have derived immense satisfaction from this show. I am so grateful that the creators of south of nowhwere were corageous enough to tackle such an edgy topic and of the-n to air this.

Overall, they have created a show in which it is evident that being gay or bisexual is not a choice and it does happen to good people. I do wish more people, especially those who are gay bi, or questioning knew about the show. I'll always cherish south of nowhere and if I ever have some self-doubts about my sexuality, I like to think I've found a sort of retreat in south of nowhere in which I can return to :)

Also, while I am upset that the show is being canceled, I do think that south of nowhere has already accomplished a good deal. I do feel that if the show were to continue, it may lose some of its initial spark. SON has already proven highly valuable in its brevity and while I'm sure more episodes would be enjoyable, perhaps a prolonging of the show would diminish some of its strenghths.

    Out of it

So it's been four months. What ever happened to giving it the sendoff it deserves? There's been barely an reruns and I haven't seen/heard any kind of webisode, podcast and all that other stuff.

But what can you expect from a network like The-N. icon_rolleyes.gif

    hi guys,
    forget these stupid mangers!!
we should take it like it is!!
we can´t change it. why should they do something for us?? we are just the customers of the-n, but i´m pretty sure, that this means nothing to them!!

so,..... we should enjoy the last times and keep SoN in our hearts alive icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif

    Crazed

I think an idea for SoN, is for Spashley to be married. And, describe their life, and include what happens to people like Aiden, Maddison, Glen, Chelsea, and Spencer's parents. I think that it would be a good idea for a webisode.
Although, i do wish SoN, was still airing new episodes.

I feel bad for The -N, truly I do, because as soon as South of Nowhere is truly over, their ratings will drop. They've added old shows, shows that were cancelled on other stations for good reasons. No one picked up Drake and Josh, or Zoey 101 for a reason, and because the station doesn't have that many original series to fall back on they have to fill their slots some other way, with rundown kiddy shows that no one really watches.

I love South of Nowhere, it was amazing to finally see the gay community portrayed through teenagers, the show was a breath of fresh air, air we all needed. Degrassi is probably the longest running show on their company's slots for shows, but really it has grown old, I grew out of it a few years back, and before I was an avid fan. You've lost fans and viewers through keeping a show running on it's last leg, when it should just be put out of it's misery.

And then you take a show that is very sucessful, and has gained a place in the viewers hearts, something that will keep us coming back to give you more ratings and more money, and you snuff it out.

You kill it, and you call the second half of the season the last season as if its it's own entity when really it's not.

You claim that you're trying to give the show and it's fans the proper send-off...well if you're lying you won't win anyone back, you'll lose a lot of viewers, you already are. If the last season doesn't do the show justice then you, the company, will only look like arrogant, money hungry , corperate pigs...and I don't think you'd like to shine that light on yourselves

I'm disappointed with this turn of events, you have your reasons for cancelling the show, whatever those may be...but the fact of the matter is, is that this shall be a piece of your downfall, because soon you won't have anything to keep the viewers appetites satisfied, you're losing South of Nowhere, Instant Star, and no one's even comin' back for Degrassi...What will you have then?

All that? Zoey 101? Drake and Josh? Saved by the Bell? Come on! I admit it was nice seeing the old episodes of All That, you know before the days when comedy for kids had it's pitfall, but not nice enough to keep me around after my favorite show goes off air. And the rest of those, well maybe you're trying for a new demographic to reach...you know the 9-14 year olds...

Sadly though I was fed the misconception that this channel was for teenagers and that's who the were gearing towards, that they weren't afraid of a little controversy, it seems though, that The-N is walking away with it's tail tucked between it's legs...I suppose the bigger corporate dogs came a'barkin' and scared you off...Oh well, after the last seasons of South of Nowhere and Instant Star....I will not be coming back to the channel, you've lost me, as you will definately lose others

  • Iunderstand that all good things have to come to a end it still bothers me but I understand. What i dont understand is why can the-n give south of nowhere a little bit of air time. Maybe like one espiode a week even a rerun would do just show you care I can't make you do that I am just asking. Really nicely. And if you really cannot give south of nowhere some air time can you at least give us a reason why thats all i ask.

    Awesome

Why the hell would they do this? This is so messed up. i mean I'm bi and seeing this happen to a show that has lesbians in it and that they are cancelling it kind of seems that the-n is being sexist. and it pisses me off. so uh yeah. anyone add me if you want. this is immature. bisexuals that are females ADD ME.
