Spashley Fashion Tutorial

Image isn't everything, but what you wear can say a lot about you.

Take Ashley and Spencer from South of Nowhere. At a glance, you know which one is the glamorous wild child and which one is the stylish beauty who's just coming out of her shell.

Recently we spoke with Maria Aguilar, the Costume Designer for South of Nowhere. She was responsible for picking out the clothes every character wears on the show. Maria dished on what it was like to work on South of Nowhere, and schooled us in how to get Ashley and Spencer's style.

Ashley's Look
Ashley is Los Angeles all the way, baby -- she doesn't care if people are looking, but she knows they are.

Want to get Ashley's rock star, high school dropout, sexpot look? Start with a really cute, non-sheer bra. Add a vest or a peekaboo shirt on top that will show it off. Pair it with a mini-skirt and some chunky jewelry. Bonus points for leather, hair dye, piercings and tattoos.

Maria says Mandy Musgrave, who plays Ashley, loved the designer labels her character prefers.

Examples:

Spencer's Look
Spencer is a down-to-earth girly girl whose world is changing, fast. Her look is pretty and put-together, and occasionally takes a tentative fashion risk.

It's totally easy to get Spencer's look. Most of her clothes are from the big affordable chain stores. Get a bunch of neat, tailored, solids, and then mix, match, and layer them. Keep an eye out for fashion but also for knockoff steals. Finish the look with a simple necklace and a big, fun handbag.

Gabrielle Christian, who plays Spencer, was great for keeping the costume department on budget. Maria would show her a top and Gabby would say, "I love that! I saw it at [the big red store that's everywhere]!"

Inside the Dressing Room
When picking out clothes for South of Nowhere, Maria stayed true to the characters -- but also had to make the actors happy.

In a female-heavy cast, that often meant deciding who got to wear the really cute item. If she brought in a red dress -- which always looks great on camera -- everyone wanted to wear it. Sometimes she would squirrel away a particularly desirable piece until right before the scene started!

Maria said the best part about working on South of Nowhere was feeling like she was making a difference in the world. "South of Nowhere sends a great, positive message. It was amazing to be able to work on a TV show that says something."

    I like to wear shirts that show a little bit of skin - just a little stomach, nothing crazy, not even a belly shirt .. But I wouldn't want my bra sticking out, I just couldn't pull that off .. Aside from just your looks, you also need to have a VERY confident, carefree not only attitude but also aura. People need to sense your confidence to rock Ashley's look.

    REALLY I LOVE THEM BOTH
    I would wear Ashley's but im a little overweight like 15 pounds and would be kinda embarrassed
    BUT if ur skinny and ur hot in real no if ur just skinny in real heck average in real
    try either one
    MY WEIGHT was my excuse and i have a good reason for it
    don't throw away ur fashion with a bad excuse like its too inappropriate,
    please stay where ur happy, and dont try to look like models either
    cause really they could look just like me ugly and fat and turn into a mini tyra banks so dont trust the fashion magazines saying thats who u wanna be just listen to urself
